The Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees is a democratic labor union representing more than 425 workers. We are a small, independently run union formed by city of Bellingham employees. Our union exists to ensure the protection of our rights as city of Bellingham workers (Local 1937) and town of Friday Harbor workers (Local 1909). www.pnwe.org

Job Description:
As a Union Staff Representative, you will play a vital role in advocating for the rights and interests of our members in various workplace matters. Your primary responsibility will be to serve as an advocate for our members, ensuring that they can enjoy a safe, and just work environment and be treated with respect and dignity. The Union Staff Representative will provide effective leadership to carry out the goals of the Union in training and leadership development, new organizing, internal organizing, and political action. The Union Staff Representative will also file and resolve grievances, meet and implement Union policies with employer representatives and with members of the community.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Representation: Act as the primary point of contact for employees seeking assistance with workplace disputes, grievances, or other labor-related issues. Provide guidance, support, and representation throughout the grievance process.
  • Negotiation: Act as the team lead in negotiations with management to address issues related to, but not limited to, wages, benefits, working conditions, and other terms of employment. Advocate for the best interests of the workforce while striving to maintain a collaborative relationship with management.
  • Education and Outreach: Conduct workshops, meetings, and training sessions to educate employees about their rights, the benefits of being a union member and relevant labor laws. Foster a sense of solidarity and engagement among the workforce.
  • Conflict Resolution: Mediate disputes between employees and management, seeking mutually beneficial resolutions whenever possible. Employ effective communication and negotiation skills to diffuse tensions and build consensus.
  • Policy Advocacy: Stay informed about labor laws, regulations, and industry trends that may impact employees' rights and working conditions. Advocate for policy changes and reforms that benefit workers.
  • Member Engagement: Encourage active participation and involvement in union activities. Organize meetings, rallies, and other events to mobilize support for collective action and solidarity.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of grievances, negotiations, meetings, and other relevant activities. Ensure that all documentation complies with legal requirements and union procedures.
  • Other Matters: Perform any other task as assigned by the Union President.

Qualifications Preferences:

  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds.
  • Commitment to the goals and principles of workers’ rights, direct action, economic justice, and progressive issues.
  • Ability to think clearly under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve independently while working as part of a team.
  • Strong speaking and writing skills.
  • Ability to function in a computerized/smartphone environment. Functional ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and social media.
  • A valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle required.
  • Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles;
  • Knowledge in contract negotiations, labor relations, and dispute resolution;
  • Ability to train and educate others;
  • Ability to learn relevant special body of knowledge including labor law like Washington State Public Employee Labor Law, NLRA, FLSA, OSHA, FMLA, ADA, Workers Compensation, etc.
