GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Political Organizer reports to Local 888's Political Director and is responsible for building the union's Committee on Political Action (COPA). The Political Organizer will use in-person meetings, telephone calls, email, texting and other creative means to enlist Local 888 members to join and contribute to COPA. The Political Organizer will monitor monthly progress towards mutually established goals and keep the Voter Activation Network (VAN) database up to date. The Political Organizer is expected to attend to the needs of Local 888 members and provide these services in an effective, efficient, and friendly manner to ensure the success of the COPA program.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build COPA membership through in-person meetings (and other means) with Local 888 members for recurring political donations through a voluntary payroll deduction.
  • Work with union representatives to set up chapter meetings focused on political education and participating in the COPA committee
  • Use union meetings and other events to build membership in COPA and increase participation in political action.
  • Assist Local 888's endorsed campaigns, including canvassing, phone banking, member organizing and public events.
  • Regular communication with Local 888 members and the general public.
  • "Progress to goal" monthly assessment
  • Keep member political data up to date in the Voter Activation Network (VAN)
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Political or union campaign experience (even as a volunteer)
  • Communication skills to express policy issues in a manner that will be accessible and motivating to average members
  • Candidates must be able to function well within a team structure. They must be prepared to work in coalition with groups outside of organized labor
  • Commitment to the labor movement and agenda for working families
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties as listed above.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of office software packages (MS Word, MS Excel and MS Access, MS Outlook)
  • Proficient with web tools, and voter databases
  • Must be legally allowed to participate in Lobby activities at the State House
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • May be required to work long and irregular hours, at times work on weekends and holidays and to travel as needed.
  • A car and valid driver's license are required
