Regional Communications Manager

Based in Washington, DC or Philadelphia, PA

 

32BJ SEIU represents over 175,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, DC. At the forefront of building the nation’s labor movement, 32BJ SEIU is changing the narrative around important social and economic issues facing working families.

The Communications Department helps to inform and energize members, to deepen their engagement with the Union and with the labor movement, and move them to action. We develop digital and print materials for use by our staff and members, and we increase public awareness and support through the media.

The Regional Communications Manager is a member of the Communications team, covering 32BJ’s Capital Area (Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia), Pennsylvania and Delaware Districts. The Manager supervises up to three staff and reports to the Communications Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and execute internal and external communications strategy, including defining strategic objectives, goals and metrics; provide coordination, and consistency in messaging;
  • Develop the plan for the best use of member communication tools, to increase member engagement and participation in various union activities;
  • Develop and manage a calendar of regional member communications coordinated with union-wide priorities;
  • Participate in cross-departmental campaign strategy and planning meetings, bringing communications expertise to the table;
  • Work with other communicators to maintain and coordinate social media channels for the assigned region, and to build relationships with reporters who cover labor;
  • Work with vendors as needed for photography, videography, translation or design services as needed.
  • Work with other Regional Managers and the Director to provide leadership to Department staff and foster collaboration across the Department.

Qualifications:
While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in communications or campaign management in labor, advocacy or related work; must include supervisory experience;
  • Experience in strategic communications planning and capacity building in large, multi-faceted organizations;
  • Demonstrated experience as an effective project manager in a fast-paced, campaign-oriented work environment;
  • Ability to plan and execute communications for a variety of audiences, including union members, workers who are seeking to join the union, elected officials and other ally audiences, as well as media;
  • Facility with digital tools and openness to expanding skills in this area;
  • Media relationships, and background in working with reporters; experience developing creative press pitches;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, handle multiple priority projects and meet deadlines;
  • Strong writing skills, strong sense of effective story-telling and proven ability to write quickly, concisely and persuasively;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice, especially work with union members, low-wage and/or immigrant communities;
  • Strong preference for candidates with written and verbal Spanish language fluency, including ability to perform accurate written translations;
  • Design and/or video editing skills and experience preferred.

Work Environment

  • This is a full time position that occasionally requires hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position can be based in either Washington D.C. or Philadelphia.
  • This position requires travel to other locations and events. A valid driver’s license and car with insurance is preferred.

Physical Demands

  • This position requires traveling to worksites and participating in events, marches and demonstrations.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary for this role is $95,000-$99,568. 32BJ offers a full benefits package that includes an employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K.
